What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “hoverboard”? Your likely answer would be the self-balancing scooter board you usually see teenagers and young adults use while strolling in the park or mall. That hoverboard has had its share of controversies, unlike the other hoverboard made by Santa Cruz, California-based Future Motion.
Called OneWheel, this is a hoverboard electric skateboard that can cruise up to speeds of 15 miles an hour. As its name indicates, this product has an 11.5 inch, single wheel right smack in the middle of a skateboard. Hence, it is a single wheel skateboard that looks very intimidating at first but actually is fun to ride.

To better understand what you can expect from the one wheeled electric skateboard, here are the features of the OneWheel:
- Weight: 25 pounds
- Range: 6 to 7 miles
- Top speed: 15 miles an hour
- Motor: 500 watts, 2 horsepower
- Batteries: 48V Lithium ion
- Charging Time: Around 20 minutes
- Warranty: One year
- Intelligent LED lights
At 25 pounds, the OneWheel isn’t as lightweight as an average skateboard, which weighs anywhere from 3 to 7 pounds. But there are many areas where it trumps an ordinary skateboard.
For one, it has a maximum speed of 15 miles an hour. This motorized skateboard is much faster than an ordinary skateboard. Moreover, a single charge can transport you as far as 7 miles, which makes this unit ideal for getting around town. It’s something you can use to buy something from the local grocery, or pay electric bills downtown.
Charging time is OK, with Future Motion saying the unit can be recharged in as little as 20 minutes. Real-life use, however, indicates that charging time can extend up to 30 minutes. But that’s still pretty short considering that recharging some motorized skateboards can take an hour or so.
The bright LED headlights and taillights of the unit will automatically light up when you switch directions. And just like almost every gadget these days, this one has its own app that can be downloaded on both Android and iOS devices. With that app, you can change modes such as cruising, speed, and elevation (if you’re going through uphills).
The single, 11.5 inch wheel looks like a miniature Formula 1 racing tire. It can go through any surfaces, from city streets, grass, paved trails, and grass. It’s a tough one, too, that can run over gravel and glass without getting any dent.
Who is it for?
Definitely, it’s a product that board sports lovers and players should try. The price may be a bit expensive, but it’s worth every penny.
This is a product that is ideal not just for skateboard enthusiasts but also for anyone who’s practical enough to realize that getting around the neighborhoods doesn’t always require driving a car. Even adults who have limited experience in riding a skateboard will find the OneWheel fun and easy to ride.
How to use it
To ride the OneWheel, you put your back foot on the rear of the hoverboard skateboard deck. Then place your front foot on the pad in front of it. The two pads actually have pressure sensors, engaging the motor that is found inside the wheel. Slowly lean forward and place your back foot on the other pad.
Once the pads are horizontal to the ground, the OneWheel starts to balance on its own. To move forward, slowly lean your body forward. To slow down or stop, lean back. If you want the unit to reverse, continue leaning backwards while the unit is at a complete stop.
If you need to turn the unit around a corner, lean forward towards the direction you want the OneWheel to turn. So if you’re turning right, lean to your right and don’t stop until the motorized skateboard has completed the turn.
Many of those who have used this Future Motion creation say that the one-wheel design makes turning less difficult to master, particularly for novice riders. Sharp turns are pretty hard on a skateboard, especially for a beginner. But with the OneWheel, the single wheel design makes it a lot easier to weave through traffic.
The OneWheel’s app is also very useful. Aside from controlling the speed, it’s also a way to check the battery life of the unit.
If you’re not yet comfortable in riding the OneWheel, you can set the mode to Classic, which causes the board to tip slightly backwards. Its speed is also limited to 9 miles an hour when the Classic mode is turned on. “Extreme” is for advanced users who want to experience how it feels to ride a motorized skateboard running at 14 miles an hour.
